Love Letter From a Child With Autism on Mother's Day

I'm expected to give you a flower.

I struggle to sign a card.

I know that you want me to talk with you,

But that is very hard.

Words do not come easily

To my tongue from in my head.

Here is what my heart knows.

Here is what it says:

“I see you at the playground,

While other mommies sit.

You stand very, very close to me,

And I appreciate it.

I see you check the locks

A hundred times each day.

You fear that it is possible

That I might get away.

Daddy wants a babysitter,

So he can take you out.

You want that very much, too,

But you have lots of doubt.

You know that I'm not safe

Left with just anyone,

So you choose to stay home

And have a different kind of fun.

There are kids whose parents hurt them,

And others who go without food,

But you cry when you put me to sleep.

Please know I am in a great mood.

You hug me and you kiss me.

You sing me lullabies.

I feel like a prince

By the time I close my eyes.

You are more than just a mommy.

You are my best friend.

Please know that I will love you

Again and again and again.”
